Agriculture
As a significant export earner and an important component of the national GDP, agriculture is a major source of employment in Tanzania. At present, yields are low, but given improved access to finance, infrastructure, modern farming inputs, and expertise, Tanzania’s smallholder farmers could produce enough to compete in regional international marketing.
As detailed in the Investment Blueprint, this provides a variety of “early-win” investment opportunities in which rapid progress could be made, including:
- Mbozi Seed Farm – a 3,000-Hectare Nucleus Seed Estate Plus Irrigated Outgrower Scheme for Maize, Soya, Sunflower, Sesame, and Pulses
- Ruvu Cattle Ranch – Redevelopment of a 40,000-Hectare Government-Owned Ranch, with the Introduction of Fattening and Slaughter Facilities for Local Breeders
- Smallholder Commercialisation and Agro-Dealer Programme
- Providing Extension Services, Inputs, and Weather Insurance
- Providing Marketing Access to Large Numbers of Smallholder Farmers
- Sao Hill Agri-Centre – Irrigated Vegetable Production Linked to an Agriculture Processing Centre (including a Biomass Plant) with Storage and Processing Facilities

Mining
The Tanzanian government plans to have the mining industry contribute 10% of GDP by the year 2025. In addition to major companies such as African Barick Gold, AngloGold Ashanti, and Williamson Diamonds Ltd (WDL), this sector includes several medium-scale companies and a cluster of small-scale mining companies.
The key mineral deposits in Tanzania are:

Logistics and Transportation
The government has made a sustained effort to create essential transport infrastructure and services with the following goals:
- Improve Access to Jobs, Education, and Health Facilities

- Strengthen Regional Integration
- Attract Foreign Investment
Investment is required to upgrade the system, particularly the TRL network. In 2009, Tanzania Railways Limited carried a total of 237,000 tons of cargo and transported a total of 285,000 passengers. Upgrades will improve operations, allowing public transportation to meet demand and compete against road transportation.
